The Gearheart

74

Jonathan Andrews, Initiate in the Seekers of the Arcane Unknown, joined the society two years ago with the hopes of protecting the secrets of magic from the greedy world beyond. However, a ravening shadow appears with a hunger for Seekers and Jonathan finds himself out of his depth. When Jonathan's friend is attacked and the young initiate is assailed with apocalyptic visions of the future, he must find a way to uncover the past and stop the beast before it tears his group, and the world, asunder. It's a ripping tale of magic, adventure and gunfights!

    Neat but frustrating
The set up and premise is cool, but the main character is frustrating, and when another character criticizes him, it’s treated as unreasonable. I have some specific issues but that would take forever to write.

    Among my favorites
I love this story, and the additional shorts. Well preformed. I like to listen to it as I work on various shop projects, which I am on my second time doing with this particular podcast. I love it, and the world in which it is set. I would love to see more stories in this setting. Thank you.

Totally not my thing, but ...
This is a cool mix of narrative fiction and audio drama. It’s a fantasy with royalty-like social structure and magic and horror elements, and a lute. And romance. Some SciFi elements. A whole mix. And there’s a lot of it. The author (a man) reads the narrative bits and all the mens’ dialog. A woman reads all the women’s dialog. There are some sound effects and music. Can’t get into it enough to assess the story, but the production is cool.

    Awesome!
I loved the book I've heard it about five times I think in the last year. I would like to hear the prequel to it on the main characters on this one. I've also heard Maiden Flight and thought it was pretty good as well. Keep up the good work.

    I'm hooked
It started off a little slow, and I wasn't sure if I was going to like it, but WOW, this story gets better and better. And listen after the episode is finished. The author has some really funny "commercials", and some music too.

    Dieselpunk at it's finest
I found this podcast while looking for Steampunk but give the era it's set it's more of fantasy diesel-punk. A well written and read podcast set in a equally well written world with a cast of unique and well developed characters. The excellent self composed sound track adds to the experience. I look forward to more of White's work.

The best fantasy/adventure audiobook I have come across
Reminded me of Full Metal Alchemist and for that alone I give it 5 stars. Also, this podiobook has some of the best character voices I have come across. I especially like cog's.

    Top notch
I loved this podcast, the only thing I would like more is some kind of prequel to define the characters a little more (perhaps that's already in the works). The story itself is fast-paced and really quite engaging, and while the characters are developed enough within the arc of the story, there's definitely a lot of backstory that I want to hear about - each character is very intriguing in his/her own way. One of the best podcasts I've come across this year. I also have to say that I really quite enjoyed the radio-timey commercials that followed each episode - I really looked forward to that element of each cast. Please keep up the good work and thanks so much.

    Very good
A bit choppy- seems like it might be a sequel with a non existent original. At times I am left wondering, "Where did this come from?" But good plot and theme, and technically perfect. Great music, too.

    Greatest Audiobook!
The mix of story line, and the voices this is one of my all time favorite picks. If you want a good story do not go any further.

    Phenomenal
I love the story, and the music is amazing. But what really has me is the world Alex White has created. It's clearly ripe for many, many stories with these characters and others.

    Couldn't ask for more
Free does not mean, cheap or shoddy-this is better than many podio books that cost $-The Gearheart is a fantastic production with excellent audio. The narration is amazing with different character voices, both male and female. Wasn't sure I was going to like this since it's not my usual genre but found myself hooked by the second episode

    Unexpected and brilliant!!!
This is a podcast that I wish could keep going, on and on and on. Brilliantly told, with excellent character development (I actually began to care about these players) and the production value is superb. This is steampunk, without being over-the-top, allowing novices like myself to understand the world. The old-timey ads at the end of each episode are such a huge bonus!!!! I actually laughed out loud, for a couple of them. What really hooked me, however, was the music. It is beautiful, poignant and perfectly placed. I found this story a little late and listened to it all the way through, with almost no interruption. Once it was over, I immediately went to Alex White's website and downloaded the music (which I would have gladly paid for). I would recommend this story to anyone, not just steampunk fans. Great story, Alex. Can't wait for more!

    Excellent Read
The author has constructed a very interesting world, has positioned the characters on a chess board, and has juxtaposed a chilling nemesis. The story telling is top notch, the voicing of both male and female characters is quite well done. I have nothing bad to say about this work except that I'm almost done.

    Thank you!!
What a great book! If it wasn't enough that Alex has given us such a great podcast novel, the production values, music and voice work are fantastic too. I know this cast has been out a while and I just stumbled upon it but let be the twenty-fifth to say "Great work!"

    Fantastic
Steam punk at its best. I rarly have enjoyed podcasts( and i listen to all)as much as this one. It's a must listen

Thank you for a Great Ride.
We arrive in the middle of the Gearheart saga and are given just enough history to provide answers to the mysteries of who and how. Soon however, we are trapped by spiders and steam engines in the imagination of this wonderful story's author. True to the steam punk style we are carried off into a world of steam engines as we find ourselves enveloped in magic, thrown in for good measure is a smidgeon of sci-fi and watch as young men and women become heroes and heroines against a broken-hearted, black-cloaked villain. The voices are so well done, it would be hard to guess the real accent is of the two readers, and make listening to an already excellent story even more pleasurable and the many characters more easily followed. Very, very well done. Thank you Alex for writing and producing this podcast your inspirational wife Renee, for her voices and patience.

    Awesome!
Come on, steampunk with magic thrown in - how awesome is that?! I'll tell you - super awesome! Seriously, The Gearheart is free, has great production quality and is generally a rockin' story. What else can you ask for? Listen and Enjoy!

    Intriguing world & fascinating characters
Solid world building and engaging characters make this a fun listen. The narration, despite the previous naysayer, is quite good, as is the pacing and overall writing. A very well-put together piece with plenty of suspense, and characters who are more than they seem.
  • TxTiket2Ride2
    It's too bad...
Like many authors this one shouldn't read his own story--the monotone narration takes a great deal away from the effectiveness and unfortunately I just can't get past the first chapter.
