The Shadow NoseLupin’s biography—last years?Aptly read story of a year or so in the life of Maurice LaBlanc’s infamous thief and adventurer. Arsene Lupin, when this takes place, is well established and well known as a gentleman thief but is also disguised as a chief of police among other identities. The whole book is here broken into chapters. I did not find it as enthralling as the many novellas where he outsmarts his policeman nemesis in an incredible way in a single plot, rather there is a long and twisting plot where his ingenuity and adaptability is displayed as he suffers as many defeats as successes. Unlike other Lupin stories, his humanity, self doubting and occasional hopelessness is also revealed. In other words, this book is probably the fullest characterization of Arsene Lupin of the over 20 that were written. Lablanc is the best at sustaining believability in the face of so many characters not being or acting in the way they are initially perceived. Some amount of sustained attention is therefore required in the listening.
