The Bridge

590

It's an alternate 2016, and Watchtower 10 sits in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, keeping lonely watch over the Transcontinental Bridge. Each watchtower sits hundreds of feet away from the Bridge, broadcasting regular traffic reports to ensure that proper safety precautions are taken. These lighthouses (for cars) are filled with a carefully selected (and very capable) crew.Watchtower 10's necessary personnel happen to be: a generalist DJ who spends her free time relaying folklore from abandoned parts of the Bridge, her supervisor (who's only there because he lost a bet), an unfailingly optimistic Bridge Travel Agent, and a groundskeeper who has a thing for romantic comedies. Unbeknownst to the general public (but totally knownst to each watchtower's crew), these stations also hold a secret that could potentially destroy the world...or save it.The Bridge is a fictional serialized fantasy podcast about the monsters we fear, the monsters we can become, and the stories we leave behind.

    Wonderful story; grating voice!
As other reviewers have said, the world building in this podcast is compelling. It’s just plausible enough to be realistic. However, I can’t listen to more than one episode at a time, no matter how badly I want to binge, because of Alex Brown’s voice. Or, rather, delivery. Given that she plays one of the main characters, Etta, and speaks often, it’s a real problem. In fact, her delivery is the only reason I don’t give The Bridge five stars. She’s always talking in a dripping-with-sarcasm voice (I love sarcasm, just not constant “awwww, gee, does that HUURT?” kind of stuff) and the mock-advertising delivery - my ears bleed! It’s like an obnoxious drunk friend who says EVERYTHING in a Home Shopping Network or cruise-ship- commercial voice - and just. Won’t. Stop. Doesn’t matter if they’re talking about going to the loo, checking someone out at the bar, discussing taxes - it’s all in this dripping, faux-enthusiastic loud voice. I know that the whole series can’t be re-recorded using another actor (or giving Alex Brown different direction), but if so, a casually interesting podcast could easily become a must-listen, can’t-wait event.

    Great story. Short and simple.
If you're looking for a tale that makes you laugh but pulls at your heartstrings, this is the podcast for you. I discovered this podcast while listening to the Ostium podcast and was instantly hooked. Really well done. Beautiful tale.

    Great story
Great story and acting as well thank you and please continue the pod. I fell like a lot of great shows started before their time and your show is one of them in 2020 I believe your ratings would go through the roof

    Favorite Podcast Ever!!!
I absolutely love this podcast! I so very much wish to see it finished but it is still amazing even partly/mostly done. Even a second listen through is wonderful. Thank you so much for making it 💕.

    Compelling storytelling at its best.
A great concept that is well developed and intriguing. I binged over a few days and was so sad when it came to end. The characters make you want to know more about their backstories, the history of the Bridge and its attractions along it span are fascinating. I cannot even fault this podcast for the occasional cliches and overacting because the story and characters are far too interesting and draw you in. We need more! Please come back!!!!

    The PIANO music
This would be one of my favorites but the incessant music. It does not add to the story if it’s continuously played and it’s SO repetitive, the same tune over and over again. I hope the next season uses music to add to the drama.

    Coming back?
I hope that this series comes back soon!

Please come back! We miss you.
This podcast is in a league of its own in narrative, mood, and storytelling. You are one of the bests, and I hope we get to hear the rest of what you have to say.

Can’t Wait for the Hiatus to End!
Good quality sound, great voice acting, and an intriguing plot combine to make The Bridge a podcast I’ll remain subscribed to regardless of the length of the hiatus. (But I still hope it will be back soon!)

    Fun, but sound quality issues
Original, engaging story that started out a bit rough, got better, but still needs work in the sound/audio editing arena. At one point they acknowledged they recorded separately - completely unsurprising, as it was very clear from the uneven sound (echoes, timing, muffling, etc.). This improves, and it seems they started recording together more, but the sound quality is still mediocre and horribly distracting. It might be less of an issue if it weren’t for the piano music (I get it - you’re passionate about your friend’s work. Cool.). Unfortunately it’s just too loud. It detracts from the narrative, playing over the voices at times. This occurs throughout the full series, not just the rough start. I wouldn’t otherwise mind the music, but again - this is about sound quality and editing - it’s just too uneven and distracting to the overall story. Hope that gets worked out before you return with more episodes...

    I. Love. This. Show. So. Much.
I listen to basically every weird and scary podcast out there. And this is my all-time favorite. Is it for everyone? YES. YES IT IS. GET ON THEIR LEVEL AND LISTEN.

    Quirky and fun
I loved listening to this podcast. It’s such a cool storyline even if it’s hard to follow at times. The folk lore about the bridge (aka mini episodes) are spot on. Super enjoyable and imaginative. The stories at Watchtower 10 are a little harder to follow. It’s hard to note when time lapses. There’s also so much time between episode release that it sometimes seems like the writers forgot where they left you. Overall - I love it!!! It’s endearing, and fun, and imaginative. Great audio quality, acting and original music. Incredible story and setting.

    How Whimsically Brillant!
I was recently introduced to this podcast by a friend, and honestly I went in without really knowing what to expect, even after reading the synopsis and seeing the general idea of the podcast. But after just listening to two episodes, I have fallen in love with this podcast. The characters are amazing with such distinct voices and features. I am unsure how other revieweres were complaing about the voice acting because I LOVEEEE THIS SHOW. I can't believe I am three years late, but at the same time, I am grateful to come across it now because of the sheer number of episodes I get to listen to before I join the misery ship of having to wait for more. This podcast really is a hidden gem, and I am here to sing the praises. Everything from the music to the characters are so loveable in their own way. I find this podcast so whimsical, weird, and I love it so much. If someone were to ask me the best way to describe it, I would say it has "A Series of Unfortunate Events" vibe, and also like you're stepping onto the elevator of the Hollywood Tower Hotel in the Twilight Zone. I can only give major kudos to the creators and also all the actors on the show. They are a phenomenal bunch and have truly built something so special. Can't wait to listen to more and tune into Watchtower 10.

    A disappointment.
The story is great. The characters are great. I wish there was more. But they have been on hiatus so long I forgot this podcast existed till an update came on today to tell me one of the cast wrote a book while on hiatus. I don’t think it will ever come back. So give it a listen for some great lore. But don’t get hooked you will just be disappointed.

    Love this show!
After listening to The Bridge for the second time, I’m putting all my thoughts here and hoping I convince someone out there to listen to this show, because it deserves to be found and heard and loved by more people. It combines found family and clever subversion of horror tropes and complicated characters and SO much sass and too many other awesome things to name. It’s so atmospheric, and the voice acting and music are incredible. It’s hilarious, heartwarming and also heartbreaking, dark, twisty, multilayered, and packed with alternate-timeline lore, using stories-within-a-story in strange and surprising ways. It has one of the best representations of depression out there, alongside a beautiful portrayal of a ragtag team turning into a family. Etta, Bertie, Kate, and Roger have so much personality and heart and are some of my favorite audio drama characters. Give the first few episodes a listen—you may well fall in love with it like I did.

    Used to love it
I used to really love this podcast and I still think it’s pretty great, story-wise, but the whole crew is so unprofessional. There’s huge gaps between episodes and no sign of them ever even finishing season ONE even though it’s been literal years. They constantly say they’re working on the next episode and that they’ll have a new one out, but it’s always a lie, and when they do release a new episode it’s obvious it was just slapped together, with the audio sounding strange and bad quality. I hope they’re not still taking money on Patreon because at this point it’s just stealing money.

    I Want to Love It
I really, really want to like this podcast. The story and ideas are wonderful, the characters are emotional and complex, and the lore is amazingly intriguing and pulls you in....but there are so many reasons it’s difficult to listen to. There’s a bunch of weird, overused sound effects, some characters have notably worse audio than others, and, worst of all, a lot of the time it’s impossible to tell what’s going on. There will be some incomprehensible sound, a character will say something vague, and nothing will be described well enough. That’s one example of how something might go. It’s infuriating, because I love the story, but it’s so hard to listen to. This could be great. But it isn’t.

    A Great Podcast
Literally everything about this show is wonderful. The story is a really good mystery and some episodes are really spooky and leave you wanting more chills!
  • Halvonator
    Interesting idea, bad execution.
It’s supposed to be eerie, but the bad acting and dialogue overshadows the plot and leaves me wondering whether I’m listening to a scary story, or readings from an angsty teenager’s diary. I’m supposed to be scared, but none of the characters are. They’re all too snarky, melodramatic, and shallow to connect with.

    Politics
It was great (like many podcasts that deal with fiction like this) until they do the small political anti trump jabs here and there. Liberals sure know how to write fiction. Probably why they also don’t care for facts when it comes to politics too. Sad. #walkaway #trump2020

    Want to love it
I really want to love this. The plot is great but it’s hard to follow. Not sure who is talking when or if they’re doing a flashback or in the present. I also don’t get the continuous piano music in the background; it’s very out of place. I like the stories about the different places along the bridge rather than the main storyline.

This podcast is a great addition to anyone’s creepy, quirky, and/or comedy-but-not-comedy lineup.

Hard to follow what is going on. Got easily distracted from the story line. Not bad but not great

    Not Gay Enough
I like it. The sound effects can be distracting and very confusing, but not enough that I can't enjoy the story. And as with every podcast out there, we could definitely do with it being more queer.

I love the stories within stories....
This is a podcast that's both dramatic and fun to listen to. It's original and has great pacing. Not too slow and not rushing toward the next "thing" ... I love it and it's one of my very favorite podcasts.
  • The Perambulator
    Great concept, only one complaint
I just found this and have listened to almost the whole archive in a weekend. I find the whole spooky bridge concept fantastic and wide open for more stories. My one complaint is that all the actors have such similar voices that I mostly need to wait for the credits to know which character was involved. It’s also clear from the outtakes that they record separately, so the intimacy of live theater is lacking. No mistake, they are all really good, but the production would benefit from some diversity in age/accents and more real interactions. Overall, great writing and engaging storyline, and I will recommend to friends.
  • egdod17
    Imaginative and eerie
A story about a mysterious Something that echoes the voices of loved ones to lure unwitting travelers to doom. The monsters on The Bridge resist categorization: funny and intriguing.

    Love it
One of the earlier Pods I listened to, kept me glued since. Voices are soothing and story is always interesting.
  • shifty1592
    It’s ok
The story is pretty good but the acting isn’t so hot. In fact, it seems to digress as the season pushes on. The dialogue is overly dramatic and the solo bit that is often at the beginning of each episode seems to be a platform the writer uses to spout off some unnecessary poetry that relates very little to the story. I’ve made it to Episode 3 and I think I’m done.

    Weird and wonderful
I like what they’re doing with an audio medium, they’re really exploring what a story like this can be.

    Baffled by reviews
The premise for this story is really intriguing. It sets the stage for a wonderfully mysterious and engaging podcast. What I don’t understand however are all the glowing remarks about the voice acting. I am truly baffled! For me, this along with the poor dialog was the major weak point of the podcast which made it inevitably unlistenable.

I’m wanting to know what happens! Will there be another season!? I love podcasts like this one. On going stories are my favorite. The voice acting is really good.

    Love it BUT
I love the podcast but the creators cited a lack of available time because they have jobs, family and the responsibilities of life as reasons that they couldn’t release new episodes in a timely manner and are now no longer releasing any new content. Meanwhile they DO have the time in their lives to release ANOTHER new podcast product while simultaneously starting a merchandise shop and patreon account for The Bridge so we can all contribute financially to a podcast that is no longer producing new content and buy the associated merch. Sorry but I think it’s a bit greedy and disingenuous to ask listeners to shill out for a podcast that doesn’t produce regular content. I release we live in the everyone gets a trophy era but no one gets a paycheck if they don’t show up for work.

    My all-time favorite podcast
I don't even know where to start when describing why I love the bridge podcast. The characters all feel authentic, with complex motivations and backstories and strong interpersonal relationships. The worldbuilding is gorgeous; the setting comes complete with legends and old audio clips from the earlier days of the Bridge. The audio design is exquisite; the amazing piano music combined with well-chosen sound effects and excellent voice actors creates a fantastic atmosphere. This podcast is seriously so good, and if you haven't listened to it yet you really need to

    Hidden Gem
Entirely underrated imo, I don't remember how I heard about this podcast but it should be talked about more. The Bridge has some really creative world-building, with a scope that expands juuuust fast enough for the listener to keep up. The frame story is interesting, and the mini stories in each episode are just fantastic, just like a good campfire story.
