Checkered Past

14

From February, 1966 through August, 1967, DC Comics branded all their publications with a checkerboard masthead, lovingly known as "Go-Go Checks". Because, you know, the 60s. With the help of his husband and intrepid friends, Dr. Bobb will examine each of these issues in depth and tell you what you need to know!

    Super fun show
I started listening think it would be just a summary of older comic books. Which it is. But it is so much more! These two are super fun to listen to. Great show. Definitely recommend it to any comic book fan, or just someone wanting something different. You will laugh and learn about older comic books.

    Introduced me to comic books!
Never in a million years did I think I’d listen to a podcast about comic books, let alone fall crazy in love! Dr. Bobb and Dr. Husband are just a lot of fun. Thanks!

    With It!
Fantastic tour of a trippy era of DC comics (that I didn’t know existed) by two hosts clearly having a blast. Light hearted, but with genuine respect for the martial and creators. So glad that I discovered this, with years of episodes to catch up on.

    My kind of funny
it’s absurd! it’s inane!...and hilarious, nerdy, cerebral, nostalgic, and illuminating. For people like me who always wanted to get into comics but never knew how or where to jump in (it’s such a massive, overwhelming world) this podcast is teaching me I have nothing to worry about, and to just enjoy the ride.

    Groovy geek banter!
Witty banter and an excellent leading duo propel this podcast forward on an epic journey examining, commentating and reviewing comic books from the 1960’s. While the format stays the same from week to week, it never feels boring or similar. The two personalities mesh very well together with our main host, Dr. Bobb, is obviously more invested and knowledgeable, and his partner being the rational (yet humorous) cynic. Tune in each week for at least an hour trip back to when things were way more groovy!

Call the Roll! Call the Roll! Call the Roll!
As a long time comics fan, I really enjoy this podcast. As evidenced by the stupid smile on my face from the very first notes of Arthur Korb’s Justice League theme. Dr Bobb reflects my love of Silver Age DC Comics while Dr. Rob calls into question strange things about these comics that I’ve never questioned before. The podcast has a nice structure, and thoughtful and humorous discussion of the more eccentric parts of these comics. There’s even some dramatic treats as the duo perform some of the public service announcement ads from these comics. Truly a treat for fans of old comics and pop culture in general, and non-geeky friends I have seem to have loved it too. I’m looking forward to a nice long run for this podcast.

Not a comic book lover, but I love this!
I’m no expert on anything comic book-related, so I was hesitant about this one. I’m so glad I listened! Bobb and Rob are a great team! I especially enjoyed Rob’s questions-he said exactly what I was thinking. Bobb’s cheeky explanation of the story made it all the more fun and easy to listen to :) If you’re a comic book nerd you will love this, and if you’re not you’ll love it too!

    Great idea!
Dr. Bobb (the expert) and Dr. Rob (the newb) take you on a tour of D.C. Comics' go-go checks era of the late sixties. Their great dynamic gives you both reactions, the well versed opinion and the first blush examination of some the craziest comics ever produced.
