This is the perfect podcast for someone learning to write. Just the right blend of tools and encouragement.

    Not easy to listen to
Lots of stuttering, um, like, you know .... seems like two college freshmen talking in their dorm room. There is good content in there somewhere, but presentation needs to be more professional.

    So useful and fun
I stumbled upon this podcast looking for writing tips. First time novelist, and this has given me so many useful things to utilize and help me get organized. Thank you!!! I plan to take some of Holly’s classes in the future! I have been listening to this during my gym time and when I go trim ponies at my day job (farrier). Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!

    Practical and Engaging
I have listened to several episodes, and each one has given practical information I can use. From how to get started or unstuck to tips for staying through the middle to the end of a project (and just about everything in between and beyond!), I consider this podcast the audio version of a jam-packed writer's toolbox. Even the tangents almost always contain writer's gold. I especially appreciate that these two don't always have the same approach to tackling a problem and present their differing methods of what works for them. They encourage us, the listeners, to try these methods on the journey of finding what works for us as individuals. If swearing is not an issue for you, I highly recommend this podcast.

    Fun and Informative
I just wish I found it sooner! So I’m writing a review to give them a well deserved boost. :)

    Easy listening
I love how easy it is to follow what they’re talking about. I normally don’t listen to podcasts because of how involved I am at my computer. I normally find it difficult to work and listen. However, I find myself fully engaged with these ladies. Thank you for being you and providing such useful information!

The Best Writing Podcast I’ve Heard
Like a lot of other writers, I consume a lot of resources on the subject of writing, and I must say that Holly and Becca’s podcast is the best. They are thorough, practical, and each episode is like a mini workshop on the subject of writing, and writing well. I must say I’ve been a consumer of everything Holly has to offer since I was in high school back in 2006, and I’m a big fan of her books. Her writing style is engaging, fast-paced, and full of gorgeous world building, with every detail essential to the story. If she mentions a missing kitchen knife you’d better pay attention because someone nefarious could very well use it in the next scene or two! She has the marvelous ability to use her experience to show others how to hone their skills, and I love how she cohosts the podcast with her daughter, who is relatively new to the space. I’ve never read any of Becca’s work before, but I love the interaction between the two, because even the occasional tangents are packed full of information. My only minor nitpick is the swearing. I have young ears in the house, so I have to be careful when I listen to the podcast. Thank you Both so much for providing this podcast! :)

    Glad I found you!
Holly helped me write my first finished novel in 2006, just from all the free information she gave away on her website. I learned so... much. I found you last night on the podcast and has binged, I am so excited to listen. A fan!

I’m so glad Rebecca talked Holly into making this podcast. It is so awesomely helpful. From being motivational to giving advice and knowledge. I love this podcast!

    I am that person
Thank you guys so much for this! Holly mentions how she got her start and not having college training in writing I can relate. I am a 32 year old single income family dad. Money can be scarce at times, I’ve finally decided to do what I can and pursue my dream! I will be taking you free writing course, and binging on all of your shows. I can’t thank you enough! Never lose your vision! You seem to be a great mom! A couple request if you haven’t done them already can you do an episode on- self publishing vs publisher, different pre-editing techniques like shawn coyne’s Story Grid.

    Favorite writing podcast
I love everything Holly Lisle does and this podcast is no exception. I’ve had so many eureka moments listening to this that have helped solve some serious plot holes and “writer’s block” moments.

    Careful
Love the tips. I am beginning my first novel and the conversations have been more than helpful to guide my draft.I’ve been listening to several of them and just came across the Jan 29th common gender stereotypes- I think their should have been more care in some of the wording for those who are lgbtq/nonbinary that are listening. Came off as a very straight binary perspective. If the topic was racial stereotypes you would not say but this isnt about race politics. Same as if you get into gender stereotypes you cant say its not about gender politics, because it most certainly is

    Good...when on track
Let me start that I do think this podcast is worth a writer’s time. The hosts (mother and daughter) are a great team, bouncing ideas off each other and explaining topics in an easy to understand way that you want to implement. Their tone is fun and casual and you kind of feel like your in a writer’s workshop. Again, it’s worth your time... ... however, like a writer’s workshop, they tend to go off on these rambling tangents. Now, I know this is on me, but I don’t have all day to listen to someone plug their writing. I recently listened to the World building and Settings episode and for a maybe 10 minutes they talked about Ms. Lisle’s first book. What started with an example (helpful) got dragged out into an almost 10-minute ramble. They finally got to talking about ways to incorporate Setting into your story around the 25-minute mark. I mean seriously, in the words of Shirley Bennet from the show ‘Community’, “C’mon, Charlie Kaufman, some of us have work in the morning!” If I didn’t have the 30 second fast-forward button I don’t think I could make it through an episode.

    Brilliant Writing Discussions
Holly and Rebecca bring together a comfortable, welcoming partnership where their mother daughter relationship and shared love for writing just works. It's quirky, fun, and down to earth conversations about the professional pursuit of writing. You'll receive insights for your own writing efforts, learn that you are really, truly not alone in the struggles and insanity of pursuing this profession, and receive confirmations of your own experiences. They cover everything from world building (and how not to sink into its endless depths) to characters and why you will have love/hate relationships with them. Some recordings are an hour and others are 30 minutes. All of them give you something to think about and nod your head to in agreement. They’ll even offer up activities to try like Flash fiction. It’s an excellent podcast. Well worth a gander.

    Love them!
The podcast has been extremely helpful and informative. It’s definitely my top two favorite writing podcasts. And I love the mother-daughter duo! They’re so fun!

    Voices in my Head
I've been a Holly Student for years and have taken away a lot of great lessons about writing, creaating worlds, and more importantly, about surviving the pull of the Muse in so many directions at once. For all of the written lessons, listening to Holly and Rebecca while struggling with writing a ten minute puppet performance took me in an entirely different understanding of what a scene is and how to think about them. That's today's immediate lesson. No telling what tomorrow will bring. Thank you!

    Interesting, informative, entertaining, fun!
I am seriously enjoying these podcasts! Lots of great info in a fun, easy to understand format. It's re-inspired the writing bug in me and I am so grateful for that! And recently I've enrolled in Holly's freebie Flash Fiction class, too... I'm loving that it's full of useful stuff and not just a fishing hook to sell the other classes. You ladies are awesome <3

    An Excellent Find
I’ve been a devotee of Holly Lisle since first reading her novel, Talyn. Since then, I have purchased her “Create” courses, though I’ve not had much time to effectively use them. Recently I came upon this podcast; through listening to the banter between Holly and Rebecca, my desire to write has revived. I love the interaction between mother and daughter, and the content is always engaging! If I had any complaint, it would be sound - I have a little bit of tinnitus and seem to pick up an bit of a hunting undertone when I listen. Also, the sponsor’s note toward the end seems considerably louder than the rest of the content. But even this isn’t enough to dampen the spirit of the show. Thank you both for re-engaging my passion to write!

So Good - Discussing writing with invisible friends
These are so awesome. I love Holly's classes (and have lots of them) and am trying to get my writing out of my head and onto the page. This feels like the best kind of writing conference. Casual conversations on writing that address topics I am very interested in while I am sitting at home in my sweats or washing dishes or anything else. LOVE IT! Hope you keep doing them for the next several years. You are going to help me get my book(s) actually finished.

A genuine, deep, helpful podcast for writers
I listen to a lot of podcasts for writers, and there's a big difference in their level of helpfulness. This is the cream of the crop. I'd give it 11 stars if I could. Not meant for the short attention span or the wannabe on the lookout for a quick fix. This is all meat, no soy protein. And it's a full meal every time. Holly Lisle is an experienced writer across several genres, traditionally published going way back, and now independently published. She’s got it covered. And she's sharing it. I won't miss a single episode.

    Amazing Experience
Not only is this a podcast and fantastic listening experience but all these episodes are worth listening to multiple times. It is like taking a class with trusted teachers talking just to you. I have used the brainstorming and the world building worksheets over the last couple of days and am amazed at what my muse is telling me. Wonderful teachers! It is fun to listen to the banter and the insight that comes to these ladies as they record as well. Worth a listen! It will change your writing life!

A fun time between new and experienced!
Often we are given only one perspective of any given topic, whether it be from the fire-forged expert or the emerald green amateur. With this podcast, listeners are presented with the unique chance to hear from both sides of the field, finding the middle ground that any aspiring writer can relate to. The relationship between the two writers doesn’t muddle the content but instead enhances the interaction with spurts of personal stories and shared experiences intermingled within serious topics, keeping the content fresh and engaging. I’m looking forward to future podcasts and the adventures these two amazing people take us on!

    Great Podcast on Writing Fiction!
I absolutely love this podcast. I'm biased, I'll admit that. I've been a fan of Holly's for years. No one teaches writing better than she does. She has this way of breaking things down and making them very clear, very understandable AND in a way that gets you excited about writing. She also talks about methods and ideas I've never seen anywhere else - and I have read many MANY craft books. So of course, I was already going to love this podcast. As an added bonus, her daughter interviews her. The fun of it is that while Holly is a seasoned writer (over 30 traditionally published novels and tons non-fiction articles and essays and craft classes) her daughter is much newer to writing (though not a beginner). So her questions tend to reflect the questions I would have were I to be the one talking to Holly. It works really well. And while they do discuss their own projects and stories, I don't think you need to be familiar with them to get good solid writing advice from someone who's an expert in the craft. I'm really picky about podcasts and only listen to a few on a regular basis - but this one has me checking and re-checking to see if a new episode is up yet. It's just that good.
