Classic Ghost Stories

272

A weekly podcast that reads out ghost stories, horror stories, and weird tales every week. Classic stories from the pens of the masters Occasionally, we feature living authors, but the majority are dead. Some perhaps are undead. We go from cosy Edwardian ghost stories (E. F. Benson, Walter De La Mare) to Victorian supernatural mysteries (M. R. James, Elizabeth Gaskell, Bram Stoker, and Charles Dickens) to 20th-century Weird Tales (Robert Aickman, Fritz Lieber, Clark Ashton-Smith, and H. P. Lovecraft) and wander from the Gothic to the Odd, even to the Literary, and then back again. Each episode is followed by Tony's take on the story, its author, its content and any literary considerations, which may be useful to students! Here's a poll that helps me plan future stories, if you have the time to fill it in. It's short!https://bit.ly/gqformGet exclusive members episodes on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/barcud

    And best narrator!

    So good!
This has become one of my favorite podcasts. The host has a perfect voice for ghost stories, and provides insightful discussion afterwards. Top rate all around.

    Highest recommendation
Some of the most iconic ghost stories in English literature read by a narrator with the voice of a highly professional actor except when he does a faux American accent. Great for relaxing before bedtime.

    Amazing stories and narration
One of the best podcasts for listening to older often overlooked Ghost stories.
  • I used to love this...
Love the bios at the end!
*Update* Tony, I know you're a real person and I love ALL your accents! šŸ¤— the ghost stories and detective stories narrated by you are so enjoyable. Keep up the good work! *** I have recently discovered this podcast and of course love Tony’s voice and exceptional readings, but I really love the little bios he does about the authors after the stories šŸ¤— This podcast is so lovely! Keep up the good work!

    So Soothing, Yet So Spooky
I love the narrator’s voice & I really enjoy the commentary/literary review at the end of each episode. Some of the comments are a bit nonsensical and make me chuckle (at one point our beloved narrator contemplates if one author would beat another in a physical fight). However, most of the end comments show a great deal of knowledge and greatly contribute to my enjoyment of the story/genre. I almost wish it was not so soothing, as I love listening to this before bed. This has caused some bad dreams, but I cannot seem to make myself stop…

    Top notch
Love the narrator’s voice and accent. Nice to have a bit of commentary at the end of the stories, too.

    A Remarkable Reader
I am a huge fan of the ghost story genre. I was so pleased, then, to find this podcast. Not only are there many unique ghost stories in this collection, clearly chosen with great care, but also Mr Walker is a truly wonderful and careful reader. I have fallen into these stories because of the atmosphere he creates. Cannot recommend enough.

    A new favorite!
Just a lovely podcast, the host performs the stories with an expressive and soothing dramatic voice. Also I enjoy the intelligent commentary on authors and all things cosmic and supernatural. Every episode is captivating and enlightening!

    This Podcast is 5 Stars
Mr Walker sources the stories and they are 5 Star stories. He plans and creates the production by himself and they are 5 Star productions. Finally he narrates and performs the production as a Podcast. So this podcast is 5 stars.

Wonderful readings and your voice is so easy on the ears.

    Love Tony and his podcast
The stories Tony picks are always fantastic and his readings are wonderful. He has a great voice and adds flair with a variety of accents. I frequently listen to them multiple times - usually fall asleep listening to one then listen again the next day to hear the whole story. Usually the second half of each episode is Tony talking about the author, the context and meaning of the story - I love these parts as well. Tony is insightful and intelligent - love his closing rants.

    So good
I’ve been listening for about a year now. Love the stories and love the way you read. I’ve never been one to listen to commentaries on anything but I’ve found your after read talks just as good as the stories. The stories you write are equally as awesome as the classic writers you showcase. I could go on and on in detail about the podcast. Just to say anyone who isn't listening is missing out. Oh yea I am finally subscribing

    A pleasure
Tony has a lovely voice and he's a great reader. Not too fussy or overacted. Great material and production values.

Top notch readings of great stories; Tony’s voice

    Family of a Vourdalak
Love the way you read this, but must point out that your bio notes were about the wrong A. Tolstoy. You said he was the Bolshevik who died in 1945. The Tolstoy who wrote Vourdalak was the A.K. Tolstoy who was born in 1817 and died in 1875. There’s an out of print book of his creepy stories called Vampires. (Sorry to be pedantic!)

    Tony Walker’s podcast is aces
I just found this podcast and I have been listening to it nonstop since. Simple and excellently done. It is just the think for haunting season.

    One of my favorite podcasts
I’ve always loved old/victorian ghost stories and hearing these stories read and then information shared about the authors has been so entertaining! Thank you!

    The Classic Ghost Stories
Tony Walker is an ideal narrator of these stories, and a gifted writer himself. The podcast has become such an important part of my evenings that I hope it long continues. I’ve just listened to an old favorite, ā€œYhe Stalls of Barchester Cathedral,ā€ but he has introduced me to many unfamiliar ones. They’re all the better for being read aloud.

Great production. Great delivery. Great stories.
I have 303 awesome episodes left. At the rate I’m going, I’m never gonna get finished listening to the **best**ghost**story**podcast** on iTunes. Great production. Great delivery. Great story choices. By the time I get done I will be five years behind in all my other podcasts.

    So glad i found this
I found this podcast through YouTube and I’m so glad i did. I love being read to while I’m busy cleaning the house, or going for a walk, or falling asleep. Tony’s voice is perfect - inflection, tone, emotion, accents, expression. I appreciate the notes at the end of each story, too. This podcast was exactly what i was looking for. FWIW, I like the longer stories, and hope you read some of your own tales on the show.

Who doesn’t love a good story?
Admittedly I gravitate towards short stories of The New Yorker ~ but this podcast does a fabulous job inserting us into an old English drawing room, facing the hearth’s roaring fire while slowly being entranced by Tony’s reading of a classic story.

    So happy
So happy to have found this show. Enjoying the fireside chats after the story almost as much as the readings themselves. His voice is calming, relaxing and his accent (dialect?) work is superb. To quote an old Split Enz song: ā€œwhy don’t you give it a whirlā€½ā€

    I love your rambles
I’m a die hard fan of classic horror. I mean, I literally spend all day every day, working and listening to classic horror stories on podcasts or audible. I follow several other podcasts of the same topic, but what truly stands out to me about your readings is the conversation after …well, I suppose it’s only a ā€œconversationā€ because I am responding to your statements in my head . 😹 Anyway, I truly appreciate this very much. I love it, actually. It may be because my degree is in fine art and I can spend all day appreciating craftsmanship and creation of all kinds. I feel like these days we don’t do that enough, so I find myself drawn to other nerds who have the capacity to appreciate literature to the degree that I can. Here you have satisfied me with your ā€œramblesā€ at the end! Bless you ! PS. You have great production even with no sound effects . Audio is clear and your voice is great for this. It’s nice and rounded off…if that makes sense . Thanks for taking time to put this into the world. And I appreciate the stories you yourself have written as well . I’ve signed up to your subscription to get them all . Cheers ! ā™„ļø

    So glad I found this!
The narrator is fantastic! My first listen was ā€œThe Masque of the Red Death,ā€ and it was ten times more immersive and dramatic with the narrator’s excellent expression and tone! I can’t wait to listen to more while I’m working or going on little walks. Thanks for an excellent show!

    Underrated GEM!
This is one of my favorite podcasts of about 80 I listen to regularly. The reader, Tony, is excellent. I’d listen to him read the phone book! I find his voice exceptionally soothing too, making this one of the best podcasts to listen to when I’m stressed out. Above all, these classic ghost stories are wonderful. Thank you, Tony!!

    Two notes
I wish you would put the story teaser/what it is about in the episode description of each episode—I’m not interested in 4 paragraphs about the author’s life, but that’s what we get when we try and read it. Basically copy and pasted from Wikipedia—what’s the point? I prefer to know if an episode’s subject matter sounds intriguing to me before I listen to it, and that information is not presented to us. Also, I’m not a fan of the rambling nonsequitors at the end that add zero insight about the work—alarmingly at times these ramblings take up half the episode length. I’ve stopped listening as frequently because of these two things mentioned.

    Tremendous Talent
Tony’s narration and his talent in animating Each character is on a par with the best professional audiobook narrators. I had loved some of the great ghost stories in Gothic horror stories, like fall of the house of usher, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Dracula, etc. Tony selections how broad and varied this genre can be. Pure enjoyment.
  • Kgee63
    Superb!
I love ghost stories in general, but Tony’s story choices and reading are absolutely riveting! And his after-story banter is so interesting and informative. My favorite podcast!

    Late to the party…
I’ve only just discovered this podcast but I’m kind of glad I’m late because now I can binge all the pre-existing episodes! Lovely delivery, insightful commentary, and wonderful curated selection. Thanks for reminding me why I loved spooky stories! šŸ‘»

Great podcast, had to cancel because I started receiving loud, jarring ads in different places throughout the episodes. This didn't used to happen and - apart from supporting Tony - os the primary reason I subscribe. I loved to drift off to sleep with these spooky stories and Tony's soothing voice, but now that this has been going on for weeks, I assume this is the new normal - kind of how now Amazon is inserting ads into its paying Prime customers streaming content. I hoped someone had brought this to his attention, but it hasn't been addressed, so today I finally cancelled. Sorry, but these shrill, obnoxious, and very loud ads just totally ruin the listening experience for me. Show's still great though.

    I’m inspired!
New listener and fellow podcaster here (The Warning Woods). Tony, your narration style and production have inspired me to up my own game. I love listening to you read these stories, and you're so likable. And then there are the stories themselves. Your selections are excellent! These classics have again inspired me to improve my own writing. Thank you!

    Excellent !
I’m new to this but I really enjoy this particular podcast. The narration is done very well - great voice to listen to, his voice pulls you right in to the story. Also, so far, the stories have been excellent. * have you ever read ā€œEnochā€ by Robert Bloch ? An excellent and scary horror story*

    Fantastic Listen
I consume a lot of fiction podcasts, mostly science fiction and horror, and was absolutely chuffed when I stumbled on this labor of love. Tony us a fantastic narrator, provides post-story insights and personal ā€œincoherent waffleā€ stream of consciousness that is a real pleasure to listen to. i cannot recommend this podcast more highly - it is truly a fantastic listen.
  • momster123
    Professional and captivating voice
This collection of high-caliber performances of expertly curated stories is a treasure. His voice is mesmerizing and he has a huge range of accents and subtle character voices. I would listen to him read a dictionary (but I’d rather hear stories :)
  • jrm36
    Great selections!
Tony chooses good stories, some of them classics, others quite obscure. There are so many to choose from, it’s quite a smorgasbord. His reading voice is confident and clear, and he does not do women’s voices in the obnoxious way Most male readers do. Each story is followed by some comments on the author, and a discussion of the story. This is my new favorite stories podcast.
  • Billyclub1988
