    ARPANET MENTION
love this podcast but as yall described furrys and said you supported them it still felt like you were mocking. it’s hard to think you really respect them are just say it bc it’s the nice thing to say. they seemed to be the one yall laugh at the most however sea punk was taken more seriously. overall a good pod and love the banter up top!

    Agree with many other reviewers
I love podcasts like this. Great topics. But I can’t enjoy this podcast because the hosts are just so mean and rude for no reason about whole groups of people. The weeb episode was hard to listen to… and I’ve tried countless others but my lord ladies chill out and have some more nuance or critical thought before casting off entire groups of people. Def not for me…

Don’t Scream at Customer Service Workers.
In the opener for the Disney Adults episode, Hannah and Maia both told cHaRmInG stories about how they screamed at customer service workers on the phone when things weren’t going their way. As someone who worked at a call center for years, I have no sympathy for people who do this. I have no sympathy for people who shout abuse at other human beings who can’t fight back because their job requires them to endure said abuse. And no, being sELf-aWaRe and calling yourself a “Karen” doesn’t excuse the behavior. Otherwise, the show is pretty good, I guess. But these anecdotes betray a lack of empathy, a lack of self-reflection, and a lack of emotional maturity on the part of the hosts… which colors how I view the show as a whole.

I do like this show, but....
The way you talk about people is sometimes super dismissive of them. I truly think, for the current series on subcultures, if you talked to us, we could explain stuff.

    Fun casual listening
But the episodes are a little hit or miss. The hosts are always fun to listen to and about 60% of the time the discussions feel thoughtful and it’s clear that Hannah and Maia know about/care about the subject. However, it’s pretty obvious when they’re not super invested in the topic or haven’t done a lot of research, and it makes those episodes kind of a slog (like the weeb episode for instance). Plus it feels like Maia kinda does all the work, and I wish Hannah did more research or took more notes of what to talk about. Overall a nice time, and I listen to most of the episodes when they come out, but sometimes the heart isnt there. When it is there (like the Hamilton episode or the Sasha gray one) the episodes shine.

Good info and perspectives but seems to lack some research
Most episodes are entertaining and informative, but they make statements that show that haven’t done in-depth research and/or they didn’t live through what they are talking about. For example, on the discussion about Emos, they said Green Day got popular due to the Bush Administration. They didn’t seem to know that Green Day started in the 80s and had significant success during the Clinton Administration.

    fine
agree with the other reviews saying that this podcast is the least interesting in its “genre”. their attention to being pc feels performative and laid on thick, quite grating at times.

    white woman tone policing?
Idk … a lot of your episodes come across as passive aggressive tone policing of Black and marginalized groups on twitter. A lot of the trends you discuss do originate from Black twitter as you note. You’re aware enough to throw in the necessary qualifiers and caveats. “To be sure … Lady A is racist and abuses the staff ….. but don’t you think everyone’s being a little too~ mean? Haven’t we gone too far?🥺” The “too far” argument is always mobilized exclusively for the defense of privileged white women tho. And for them alone. You know not to point the finger directly at Black people and accuse them of bullying the poor white women, so you point the finger at The Internet instead to launder your grievances. But it also feels like you would prefer if Black twitter would shut up and stop coining new phrases that will inevitably get co-opted by the right wing.

Thoughtful and fun pop culture analysis
Maia (Broey Deschanel) and Hannah are wonderful to listen to - nuanced, candid, and respectful of their pop culture subjects. I appreciate their openness to learning and sharing, and their topics are always fun and relevant.

    Engaging and entertaining cultural analysis
I love this podcast! It’s one of my favorite things to listen to at work, it keeps me entertained and engaged all day, and I’ve binged the entire archive of episodes over the past few weeks. Maia and Hannah offer intelligent and analytical perspectives on social media and internet culture, mostly exploring fads, scandals, and other moments from the last 10 years or so. I’m always particularly impressed by how they are able to offer insight on different recent cultural micro-eras, remembering what was up in the culture during certain years, and how it affected their personal and social lives. To my tired millennial mind, all of that has become blurred into “the recent mess,” so it’s actually really refreshing to think about how historical moments are being made (and forgotten) in the here and now. I also appreciate their unapologetically feminist lens, and found the most recent season hugely fascinating in its examination of the relationship between technological innovation, the panic around sex work, puritanical internet culture, and the commodification of women’s bodies. Being faced with how these patterns repeat themselves over and over again is harrowing, but it’s also something that’s deeply important to understand in the moment where we find ourselves, where none of these things are on track to get any better. Thank you both for doing the work. One thing I do sometimes find lacking on the podcast (and which inspired me to write this review — sorry, gals, I still think you’re great!!) is a queer perspective. While I have no doubt that Maia and Hannah are both queer-positive, and know that they work to incorporate queer literacy into their analyses, I sometimes feel like their arguments could be deepened and expanded by a more explicitly queer-feminist approach (or at least adding it to the mix!) This was particularly noticeable to me on the recent episode about Dating Apps. Ultimately, their argument landed on the side of “dating apps are worsening our relationships to intimacy and increasing a culture of self-commodification.” While I agree with many aspects of that conclusion, I also had the sense that Hannah and Maia’s personal distaste for dating apps and their own experiences with heterosexual dating were impeding their understanding of how these apps might offer some of the only safe and gratifying ways to develop sexual relationships for certain groups of people. It felt like a bit of a cop-out to say “this argument is completely distinct from queer sexual politics, which is a separate and unrelated thing.” From my perspective, queer sexual politics have a lot to do with everything, and the self-examination and sexual negotiation that queer sex often requires can offer many tools for all sorts of relationships. If the self-labeling often found in queer spaces is so distinct from the self-commodification of dating apps, as Hannah and Maia argue, then what makes it so distinct? Might there be some solutions to “the intimacy crisis” to be found by digging a little deeper into that question? ;) This is still absolutely a 5-star rating for me, because podcasters holding my specific views and perspectives is not a requirement for me to appreciate the intelligence, humor, and nuance they bring to all their work. Keep up the good work, y’all. I’m eagerly awaiting the next season!

    💯
I don’t know how I would get through the work week w/o this podcast. My only criticism is that they don’t release episodes as fast as I’d like! :) Both hosts are very fair and level headed and always have such a unique, fresh take on things. Definitely give it a listen!! ❤️

    Feels like chit chat
Honestly feels like I’m just talking with my friends about current events. The podcast mimics the way we go from more intellectually rigorous observations to silly little memes and call backs. I find it very refreshing to hear more nuanced positions on a show that doesn’t take itself too seriously and seems to want to convey their opinions rather than change or argue my own. I miss conversations like these that I would have in college frequently but lack in the “real” world.

    i’m an enjoyer:)
it’s hard for me personally to find podcasts that are not only interesting and intellectually based, but also funny and entertaining. i recogize that some other reviews have criticism of specific points or general viewpoints, but i like this podcast because it makes me wonder and consider what i actually think about it. if you don’t agree with something in particular they’re saying, or one specific episode, let it go and don’t listen to it. this is an enjoyable conversation for me that utilizes sources in the research. consume what you like, and do your own research if you don’t like it. thank you hannah and maia for bringing up subjects that i don’t often consider, ones that i do believe needs to be talked about more often.

    The Sasha Grey episode
was fantastically entertaining! I appreciate your insights into her, her legacy and all those gray areas. Tumblr came up oh so briefly and I think you could make a great episode diving into the pre-Snapchat, pre-OnlyFans era of naked Tumblr. It feels like it might be the clearest reflection of Sasha Grey’s influence, particularly on women. ✌️💛

    Smart Perspectives
I really enjoy the broey youtube channel so i came to the podcast to see what their perspectives are on these cultural topics and i got exactly that. They approach subjects with a lot of compassion and the perspective of who is going to be affected on the micro and macro scale of culture/ communities; While trying to keep a level of skepticism that acknowledges the history of each issue. Are they perfect? No, in fact for topics that they aren’t as knowledgeable on they admit to it at the beginning and usually get someone else to be a guiding voice for those conversation. Still some episodes i leave wishing i had heard even more context or additional voices, but their conversation allows me to launch off into my own research if i’m interested. I see them as giving a voice to a type of causal conversation that is still critical and nuanced that should be happening between friends all the time. Honestly, the podcast has given me some new perspectives that i haven’t thought of or hadn’t humored before. Hope they get to keep going for as they’re interested! +funny

Thank you for bringing light to the atrocities that is happening to the civilians in Gaza. A lot of podcasts almost never bring it up and we can’t just ignore it. Other than that, love the content and conversations as always.

If misinformation and vocal fry are your thing…
Then, this is the show for you? Listen, I’m a millennial so perhaps I’m past the age of the target demographic here - but nevertheless I genuinely tried since I often enjoy the content from Brooey Descehanel. But two Gen Zers getting their news from Twitter, inflicting every word as a question? “Is, like, so annoying!” Hard to take things seriously. But what really crossed the line was the horrendous misinformation presented in the Depp V Heard episode - showing that neither of these girls watched the trial whatsoever (for the record I did, for a journalism assignment… each and every day) and are so woke they can’t even see the facts of this situation. Continuing to perpetuate the lies MsM feeds us… that’s why we support independent journalists work! That’s why we come to podcasts whos researchers take things seriously … yet this episode reveals these girls don’t do any of those things. So shameful. Another supporter of Amber Heard who blatantly reveals themselves to be ignorant to facts. Disappointing.

    I adore this podcast!
I am constantly refreshing my library to see if a new episode has been posted - this is a great concept for a podcast and provides a fresh and nuanced lens to many past and overlooked issues in a way that is both intriguing and entertaining. Thank you for your detailed deep dives and discourse!

Lost me after the James Charles episode
They completely lost me after this episode. I agreed that Tati mishandled the situation and was very homophobic her video. But they panted JC as the victim the whole podcast and waited to mention anything about him talking to minors until the very end and still did not seem to grasp the seriousness of the situation. He wasn’t just a 21 year old talking to minors, he was also someone using his power and influence to try and get with minors. Saying that people only care because they’re homophobic is just wrong and minimizes the situation. He was an adult in power trying to have sexual relationships with minors. Please do better.

    Genius
This podcast is so good it feels like someone reached into my brain and developed a concept and episode list tailored to my exact interests. When I first scrolled through the episodes a few months ago I was seriously torn between like 10 different episodes to start with. I love Maia (as a semi-frequent watcher of her channel) and Hannah’s dynamic and look forward to hearing their thoughts on random internet topics. I always wish each episode had a comment section because I’ve never been so excited/inspired to discuss!! My one piece of feedback is that the editing of the guest episodes can be a bit awkward at times. I LOVED both the guest episodes (Rayne and Funké are great!!!) but it would be cool to have a dedicated “guest section” with their thoughts and banter (or bring them on for the whole episode) rather than cutting in between smaller excerpts of an interview-style conversation. It can get a tad bit confusing as a listener sometimes. Also, I’d just love to hear more of a communal convo!! I genuinely love this podcast so much though (this is the first review I’ve made on this site) and I can’t wait to see where it goes from here!!!! (#^.^#)

    Top Notch in Toronto
I became aware of Maia via her Broey Deschanel YouTube channel, which is excellent. And the trend continues through rehash. Her and Hannah give fresh insight on each topic. Love to hear it. No misses, no notes.

    Pretty good..
Overall this is great content. I gotta say y’all really unpacked some stuff for me about AI and the writers strike that I didn’t fully understand (as someone who used ai for work on a daily basis, and have since reevaluated and curbed that use.). With that said… Y’all threw me with the Kim Kardashian episode. I’m in my late 30s and butts were ALWAYS a thing in the awareness of my lifetime. Big butts and having your whole hip bone having torso out, and super wet lips. It’s not because of Kim. She’s just kind of perfect. Not everyone can look like that, and that’s one of the reasons she’s a celebrity. And I think that’s fine. But mostly, ladies, I agree with you. I’ll probably come back and give 5 stars tomorrow
  • AmandaOrien
    Good
I enjoy this podcast, I like their takes on Try Guys and Caroline Calloway (the interview was iconic). I will say sometimes they dismiss things with a flip of the wrist that I think could be explored or articulated. Nonetheless I will continue to listen as they’re very smart and talk about things I’m interested in.

    Politely rude
I mean this as constructive criticism. I’m truly not venting. I thoroughly enjoyed this show for two months (two seasons were available). It was nice to listen to two fellow late-20’s women have smart and fun discussions about modern culture. For that reason I ignored some statements that I found rude or dismissive. Other reviewers have mentioned “catty” and judgy behavior. I generally agree. A moment that stood out was a very confident claim that it’s a privilege to be a stay at home parent. This is important; Everyone’s life is different and some stay home because they need to and, for them, working would be a privilege. So I found this statement really dismissive and harmful. My final straw was the chatgpt ep. Hannah said she “hates science nerds” in a fairly sincere and non hyperbolic tone. She clarifies, “I don’t hate ALL of you”, which honestly I think makes it sound all the more sincere. Every group has a-holes and I get the people she’s talking about. But the broad generalization was unnecessary and gross. I like both Hannah and Maia enough to give feedback. Maybe consider editing out or talking through your offhand comments about entire communities. This science nerd (who was raised by one working and one stay at home parent, and I assure you we were poor) has enough to deal with.
