The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them.

Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run

“Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father.

Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger

Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice.

Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country.

Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood

Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question.

This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago.

Season 1 - The Burden

In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname.

Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance.

For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast.

Welcome to The Burden.

    Heart breaking!
Too many adds But the program is investigated so well and professionally. I’ve read the stories of many missionaries who tell these same kind of tales. There are so many brave people out there! Thank you for this season

    Avenger is incredible
Season 3 is an incredible listen, beautifully told, intense and enrapturing. Really just an amazing story, thank you so much for sharing it.

    Great Podcast
Super interesting and well thought out. However, way more ads than other podcasts I listen to. It doesn’t really spoil the content (still gave five stars), but it does stand out compared to others’ podcasts, so thought it was worth a mention.
  • Maw Coops
    Way too many ads
Good story, well told. But level with us and put the ads at the end or beginning like most podcasts so we can skip them.

    Important story told well
Enjoyed this series (both seasons) and it illuminates a truth about policing and class/poverty/racism that a lot of reviewers here seem to resent but the fact is truth is NOT blind. I gave it 4 stars because a) WAY too many ads and b) sucking up to the cop at the end was distasteful; no matter how much the DA’s office is to blame for prosecuting obviously concocted crimes, that detective had to know he was making evidence up or paying/pressuring vulnerable people to do it for him. Very definition of corruption.

    98% ads. 2% stuff.
The person is a Jew. Hence. ...

Season 1: Fascinating story but …
Too much of 1 of the hosts putting themself in the story. Also way to many commercials.

    Amazing Find
According to this podcast, they have found the first innocent drug dealer!!! Who would’ve thought that you had to sell drugs as a youth because there were no lawns to mow in the city. If you’re a fan of the Farley method of fanboy interview, you’ll really like this podcast ‘how cool you’re a drug dealer’.

    Amazing work
Look you put in all the detail and facts you’re talking like you’re reading a story

    The Burden
Finished binge listening. The story was quite good. It’s so sad to hear that law enforcement does so much shady work — knowingly. Also, since most of the public is law-abiding and trusting of the uniform/badge, why take advantage of the innocent?

    Seemed interesting until it wasn’t
I made it through the first episode of what had the prospect of being an interesting story, but when it turned into a bunch of boring “everything’s racism” cliches, it immediately became just like everything else. Yawn.

    Wow!!
This was a binge listen. I couldn’t stop great storytelling. I felt like it was the perfect display of flood humans who were disregarded and treated like they didn’t matter but we could see their humanity. And the ending through me for a loop. I hope there’s another podcast from this group. I’ll be first in line.

    Great pod - first rate!
Great content “first-grade detective” makes him sound like Kindergarten Cop

    Great job
I never binged podcasts until I discovered this one. The storytelling and investigative skills are fantastic. Great podcast! I hope there are more episodes to come. Every episode keeps me on the edge of my seat. I can't wait to see what they cover next! The music is kinda cheesy. The host has a great dynamic that makes the content even more engaging. I've recommended it to all my friends.

    Great binge!
    Love this podcast!

    Highly recommend!
This is one of the best true crime podcasts since serial early seasons. As an insider who has worked in both the federal and state criminal justices systems, the show’s fair and balanced take was spot on. In fact, it was so balanced, I emphasized more with the “disgraced detective” than the “jail house lawyer” despite my personal opinion that he was wrongly convicted. Keep up the good work podcasters and I hope more seasons are in the works.

    Tough to listen to!
Episodes do not start until 6 minutes in…WTF Trash!!! A good story with a terrible format. I hate when podcasters use their podcast to play DJ. Awful, unnecessary music. So slow to develop, 1st episode all you get is a stretched out introduction. 2/3’s of the way into episode 2 and you still do not know what’s going. They just drag out the story and Louie seems like your typical narcissistic. They are all over the place and I am struggling to get through this podcast. Wondering if the producer has any experience? 🤔

    A must listen
I’d like to preface my review by saying that I write this from the perspective of a mental health therapist, a true crime aficionado, and, most importantly, as a human being. I’d also like to say that after listening to dozens of long form podcasts, this is the ONLY one that has moved me so profoundly as to write a review (when you write case notes all day every day, you get a little sick of writing). This podcast was BEAUTIFUL. It explored the complexities of the human experience in a way that honored every participant. It explored the suffering that these men endured while imprisoned while also portraying one of the significant contributors to their suffering as a fallible human being and not a heartless monster. As a therapist, I want to look at people based on their potential and not just based on who they are or who they’ve been. I feel that this podcast really allowed me to do that. This podcast beautifully illustrated how important it is to remember that where human lives are concerned, if any person is “winning”, we’re all losing. I am so incredibly moved and I just want to say thank you to every one involved in the production.

    Love it!
Great story, awesome story tellers. Love all the perspectives plus the twists and turns. I really enjoyed this podcast.

    Episode 9
I was with you all on this journey until your encounter with Jewell (sp). She didn’t owe YOU an explanation, and you could clearly see that she was in distress, but you persisted. Disgusting.
  • waxmygeorgewbush
    It’s just ok
Average story of over zealous detective broken into WAY too many parts. First episode has the bold storytelling hook then falls asleep for the remainder. Seems more like a hit piece against the detective than a requiem on criminal justice as a whole.
  • No cussing please!
    Too many F Bombs
Great story, too much unnecessary cussing

Episode 8 is all time great podcast
The season up until now has been interesting, but I experienced so many emotions during 8

    Love everything
I’m excited to hear the stories that you found they touch me personally because I have experienced things like this. Keep up the good work sides of their stories love the theme song think it fits perfectly.

    It’s good
    I really enjoy it
  • Tisha1800
    Okay
This is a great story. The theme song detracts from it. I think this would be taken more seriously without some of the hijinks.

    Great podcast
A+ for content, presentation, production, music!

    Unique and Well Done
This is a complicated and important story told in a way that brings it to life. I felt like I knew the main characters by the time I finished. People need to understand that the serious failings of our justice system, at its worst, can literally steal a person’s life. It’s shallow to pick on the music when there’s so much more at stake. If you don’t like it, fast-forward!
  • Happygoddess
    Well done
    Interesting and informative! Great podcast
  • Kris Odub Hampton
THIS is how storytelling is done
Great story, great music, great editing. Not everybody is ready for storytelling to be done this way, but it’s the best way, no question. Well done!
  • Beachespeaches
    It's fine
The most remarkable thing about it is how lame the theme song is.
  • Lis5718
    Obsessed
As a wrongful conviction advocate I wasn’t sure about hearing Scarcella’s story. Happy to report I was totally wrong, I’m obsessed with this podcast. Steve Fishman is one of the finest journalists and the way he interviews Scarcella is masterful. Dax playing devils advocate and presenting information about the wrongfully convicted is genius. They hit it out of the park!! P.S. Fishman’s first podcast Empire on Blood is my all time favorite podcast, check it out if you haven’t already.

    Addictive
Everything is perfect. Even the theme song! Great Podcast.

    Fascinating story telling
Absolutely incredible journalism and story telling at its finest!

    Pretty Good
Get rid of the lame theme song. The story is compelling, the disruptive theme song is annoying, not needed, better off without it
  • Radio head 12345
    Great show
I can’t wait to hear the rest of it. First two episodes have me hooked.
  • Charles Dherlin
    Really interesting story!
Super recommended, I think everyone should be listening and educated on the subject.
  • shaw davari
    Finished it in one sitting
Always looking for something to accompany long drive to work. Great story. Didn’t know where it was going. Kinda stunned by the ending. If you’re looking for a new binge listen, you found it.

As good as empire on blood
    Or better
  • RaeOn1999
Great story great reporting over the top production and host delivery.
